Google Ai Mode

From deep research with query fan-out and AI Overviews, to shopping, multimodal input, and interactive follow-ups, Google AI Mode brings everything together into one powerful, real-time search assistant.

With this shift, users are no longer just typing keywords—they’re engaging in dynamic conversations with search itself.

And that means one big shift: the way people search is changing!

Search habits and SEO

Search queries are no longer just short keywords — they’re becoming more conversational, nuanced, and context-driven. With today’s AI-powered search, many answers are delivered directly as summaries, often satisfying the query without requiring users to click further.

For businesses, creators, and SEOs, this changes the game. Search has evolved into a choice of two key approaches:

A) Answering questions through conversational SEO (NLP): Craft direct, clear answers and articles that are structured to align with natural language queries.

*Think snappy, precise, and easily digestible content that AI can pull into summaries.

OR

B) Engagement beyond the click! Reach the right audience on the right platforms. Beyond Google, traffic can come from ChatGPT, forums, social media, Bing, Yahoo, Telegram, and more..

The key is not to spread thin across every channel, but to pick the platforms where your audience hangs out most and build genuine engagement there.

Changes to SEO Metrics

Ai mode is included in Search Console

For the SEO’s: AI Mode is now counted towards the total of Search Console.  This can reshape traffic patterns: fewer clicks to websites, more zero-click searches, and results pulled directly into the AI interface.

This can also affect a range of “traditional SEO” tracking methods that focus on rankings and impressions.

Instead of rankings, some of the changes include:

    1. Increase in Impressions: Your impressions may rise (since AI answers pull in more pages for context), but clicks may not follow. This could make CTRs look worse even if visibility increases.

    2. Brand visibility shift: Even if users don’t click, your brand may appear in AI summaries. This could help with brand recall but makes tracking ROI harder since exposure ≠ clicks.

    3. Attribution challenges: Traffic driven by AI Mode may blur attribution. Was it a Google click? An AI-generated reference? Expect more “dark traffic” in analytics.
More Info: Usually we can track user traffic through tags or google analytics under GA4 > Explore > Path Exploration > Pages. However, with AI driven traffic, some of the views may not even follow any of these paths. Contact information written on the AI Answer Engines may lead to a direct call up. This is currently not directly trackable.

    4. Competitive overlap
AI responses often blend multiple sources. Even if you rank well organically, competitors may get pulled into the same AI answer, diluting your share of attention.

    5. Opportunity in citations
If your content is cited in AI responses, it can still position you as an authority. Tracking and encouraging citation-based visibility could become as important as link-building.

Research

For the students and professionals working on projects, there is now one more option for research!

At the core of AI Mode is Deep Search, powered by query fan-out. Instead of relying on a single search, AI Mode breaks your question into hundreds of sub-queries, pulling together information from across the web. It then reasons through these results to generate an expert-level, fully cited summary — the kind of report that might normally take hours of research.

ai mode as a form of research

In the example above, a search on “provide me a cited resource list of the idea on stream of consciousness and its impact on modernism” led to an introduction of 16 sources, broken down into foundational texts, criticisms, scholarly articles and examples.

Among the results were well-known works like James Joyce’s Ulysses and Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse, all accurately cited. (Do refer to the proper citation style that meets the relevant academic standards.).

  • AI Mode sits directly on Google’s search index → info is up-to-the-minute, unlike ChatGPT which can lag unless connected to Bing/Perplexity-style live browsing.

This means that AI Mode is more than a chatbot — it functions as a research-centric assistant, capable of reasoning across multiple sources. More importantly, it is directly from Google’s SERP (where google scholar’s and related sources are located) unlike Chatgpt which pulls from Bing instead.

Key Takeaways from Google AI Mode

  1. Search is shifting from keywords to conversations – Users now interact with search like a real-time assistant, expecting direct, clear, and context-rich answers.

  2. SEO metrics are evolving – Impressions may rise while clicks drop, brand visibility may improve even without traffic, and AI-driven “dark traffic” complicates attribution.

  3. Opportunities lie beyond clicks – Businesses and creators should adapt with conversational SEO, build authority through citations, and focus on genuine engagement across the platforms their audience uses most.
